Ald. Edward M. Burke (14th) has softened his ordinance of flat out banning health hazard trans fats from restaurant menus. All restaurants are no longer being affected by Burkes ordinance. Only big chain restaurants are targeted. Restaurant chains with at least $20 million in annual gross sales, namely the major fast food establishments, such as McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Burger King, have recently been asked by Burke to act voluntarily in taking trans fats off their menus before seeking passage of the legislation that will require them to do so. - Southwest News Herald

The Alzheimer's Association International Conference is going on right now in Madrid, Spain, and the New York Times provides a bit of a run down on some of the results being presented there. The new work reinforces some previous work that suggests that Alzheimer's, at least on some level, may be a metabolic disorder. One of the earliest hints of this was the finding that a specific allele of one of the proteins involved in regulating blood cholesterol levels (APOE 4) made carriers more prone to age-related Alzheimer's. New results presented at the meeting show that a drug designed to increase neurotransmitter levels reduces brain deterioration in patients with symptoms of Alzheimer's onset. This protective activity, however, only works for patients carrying the APOE 4 allele. Altering cholesterol metabolism seems to be generally protective against Alzheimer's, but this is the first time this protection has been achieved via altering neural function.
IN the four years since the commonwealth legislated to allow embryonic stem cell research, Australian scientists have taken a huge leap forward and are at the forefront of this global endeavour. Knowledge in fields such as diabetes and diseases of the blood, heart, lung and breast has advanced, and the legislation has allowed improvements in in-vitro fertilisation technology, resulting in higher success rates. Embryonic stem cell research is rich in promise. It has already demonstrated its potential in the study of disease causation, in development of new diagnostic methods and in basic research. In the longer term, the possibility of new therapies for serious diseases is real, though this will be the work of decades rather than of years. Australia's prominence in the field was the result of a conscience vote in the federal parliament in 2002.
Because healthy bodies and minds go hand in hand, Ontario teenagers should be worried about how little physical activity many of them are getting. A new study indicates more than half of high-school students in Ontario drop physical education after Grade 9, the only year of secondary school in which it is mandatory. Even fewer participate in competitive and recreational high-school sports programs. That should raise alarm bells for both parents and teachers. As obesity rises among young people and puts more kids at risk of lifelong health problems, it is critical that schools do a better job of encouraging exercise. To that end, a good first step would be to make physical education compulsory for at least one more year. The study, published recently in the Journal of Adolescent Health, shows 98 per cent of Grade 9 students in Ontario take physical education.
Is it possible to increase your activity level just by changing jobs? Well, it may not be practical, but some jobs actually can keep you in shape. However, any movement at all burns calories, and perhaps that's why public health advocates consistently recommend that you just get out there and move. In fact, physical activity need not be strenuous to achieve health benefits. Regular physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases, including high blood pressure, stroke, coronary artery disease, Type 2 diabetes, colon cancer and osteoporosis, as well as to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. And recently, a study by the American Council on Exercise and the Exercise and the Health Program of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse looked at 10 different occupations and how many steps they require each day.
Diabetics are often asked to become their own doctor, nutritionist and coach. They must figure out what to eat and when, assess how much insulin treatment they will need and measure the glucose levels in their blood several times a day. Studies have confirmed the importance of daily management of these blood sugar levels – it significantly reduces the complications that diabetics can face when their blood sugars are off-kilter – but few patients have it down to a science. Now a company has created a blood glucose monitoring system, called the OneTouch Ultra2, that experts say will go a long way in helping people control their diabetes. One of the biggest problems, said California endocrinologist Dr. Ann Peters, is that patients need to have a complete picture of their body's glucose levels – before and after eating.
